WikiLeaks releases ‘The Detainees Policies’

WikiLeaks releases prisoner treatment manual from Guantanamo Bay

2012 10 26

Julian Assange’s WikiLeaks website on Thursday started publishing more than 100 US Department of Defense documents including the first prisoner treatment manual for Guantanamo Bay.

The latest release by the anti-secrecy site comes as Assange, who faces charges of rape and sexual assault in Sweden, remains holed up in the Ecuadoran embassy in London with what Quito says are health problems.

Assange said in a statement that the newly released documents exposed military detention policies at camps in Iraq and at the Guantanamo Bay Naval Base in Cuba following the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States.

Among the documents is the 2002 manual for staff at Camp Delta at Guantanamo, shortly after it was set up by US President George W. Bush to house alleged Al-Qaeda and Taliban detainees from the “war on terror”.

“This document is of significant historical importance. Guantanamo Bay has become the symbol for systematised human rights abuse in the West with good reason,” said Assange, the founder of the website.

He added: “‘The ‘Detainee Policies’ show the anatomy of the beast that is post-9/11 detention, the carving out of a dark space where law and rights do not apply, where persons can be detained without a trace at the convenience of the US Department of Defense.

“It shows the excesses of the early days of war against an unknown ‘enemy’ and how these policies matured and evolved, ultimately deriving into the permanent state of exception that the United States now finds itself in, a decade later.”

US President Barack Obama vowed within hours of taking office in January 2009 that he would close Guantanamo Bay, saying it was acting as a recruiting tool for Islamist extremists.

But Obama has so far failed to do so in the face of deep opposition in Congress to moving inmates to the US mainland, and several people accused of involvement in the 9/11 plots are on trial at the camp.

WikiLeaks first enraged Washington in 2010 by publishing a flood of secret military files on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as a huge cache of diplomatic cables from US embassies across the world.

Assange, 41, walked into the Ecuadoran embassy in London on June 19 seeking asylum in a bid to avoid extradition to Sweden, where he faces questioning over alleged rape and sexual assault.

He was granted asylum on August 16 but Britain has refused to grant him safe passage out of the country, and he remains in the embassy.

Ecuador said on Wednesday it has requested a meeting with Britain to discuss the health of Assange, who it says is losing weight and suffering vision problems.

US officials investigating whether Libya attacked was timed to 9/11 anniversary

The U.S. Consulate in Benghazi is seen in flames during a protest by an armed groupsaid to have been protesting a film being produced in the United States September 11, 2012 (Reuters / Esam Al-Fetori)

2012 09 12

Officials within the Obama administration have reportedly said the deadly attack on the US consulate in the Libyan city of Benghazi, which killed ambassador Chris Stevens, was planned in advance.

Both the New York Times and CNN are quoting sources within the administration as saying the attack on the consulate was planned.

CNN’s source claimed “Tuesday’s attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, was planned in advance, and the attackers used the protest outside the consulate as a diversion”. Intelligence officials also reportedly said the attack on the Benghazi consulate was too coordinated or professional to be spontaneous.

Some media reports have also suggested ‘Innocence of Muslims‘, the scandalous film that many blame for sparking the protest, was used as a pretext for the attacks on US embassies in Libya and Cairo.

Senior US officials also told CNN that unmanned surveillance drones are expected to begin flying over Benghazai and other locations in eastern Libya to look for jihadi encampments and targets that may be tied to the deadly attack on American personnel.

Obama faces growing credibility crisis

“The bottom line here is that Americans don’t believe in President Obama’s leadership,” says Rob Shapiro, another former Clinton official and a supporter of Mr Obama. “He has to find some way between now and November of demonstrating that he is a leader who can command confidence and, short of a 9/11 event or an Oklahoma City bombing, I can’t think of how he could do that.”

Robert Gibbs, Barack Obama’s chief spokesman, got into hot water this week for daring to speak the truth – that the Democrats could lose control of the House of Representatives in November. But it could be even worse than that.

Contrary to pretty much every projection until now, Democratic control of the Senate is also starting to coming into question. While Mr Obama’s approval ratings have continued to fall, and now hover at dangerously close to 40 per cent according an ABC-Washington Post poll published on Tuesday, the fate of his former colleagues in the Senate looks even worse.

In the past few days polls have shown Republican challengers taking the lead over previously safe Democratic incumbents, such as Barbara Boxer in California and Russ Feingold in Wisconsin. Indeed, given the uniformly negative direction in the numbers, it is now quite possible the Republicans could win the Senate seats formerly held by both President Obama in Illinois, and Joe Biden, vice-president, in Delaware.

Add to that the continuing woes of Harry Reid, the Senate Democratic majority leader, in Nevada, where the Republican party’s recent nomination of Sharron Angle, a far-right and highly eccentric Tea Party supporter, appear to have had no positive effect on Mr Reid’s prospects, and the Grand Old party has a good shot at taking control of both houses of Congress. Worse for Mr Obama, political scientists say that at this stage in the calendar, there is almost nothing he can do about it.

“If you ask me where the silver lining is for President Obama, I have to say I cannot see one,” says Bill Galston, a former Clinton official, who has been predicting for months the Democrats could lose the House. “Just as BP’s failure to cap the well has been so damaging, Obama’s failure to cap unemployment will be his undoing. There is nothing he can do to affect the jobless rate before November.”

The direction of the data could hardly be worse. According to Democracy Corps, a group headed by Stanley Greenberg, a liberal pollster who is a close friend of Rahm Emanuel, Mr Obama’s chief of staff, a majority of US citizens see Mr Obama as “too liberal”.

Astonishingly, 55 per cent of citizens think Mr Obama is a “socialist” against only 39 per cent who do not share that diagnosis. The same poll shows 48 per cent support for Republicans against just 42 per cent for Democrats. The numbers are eerily similar to 2006, except that it was George W. Bush’s Republicans who were on the receiving end four years ago.

In private, informal advisors to Mr Obama are almost as negative. According to one, the US public’s loss of confidence in Mr Obama’s leadership is a factor above and beyond their dissatisfaction over the state of the real economy, which continues to slow as last year’s $787bn stimulus starts to run dry. The adviser, who asked to remain anonymous, said the public did not know what Mr Obama really believed. Examples include his lukewarm support last year for a public option in the healthcare bill and his equally lukewarm support today for a Senate bill that would extend unemployment insurance and aid state governments to keep teachers in their jobs.

In both cases, Mr Obama has offered only token, negotiable, support. “I never thought I would say this, but even I’m unsure what President Obama really believes,” says the adviser. “Instead of outsourcing decisions to Congress, he should spell out his bottom line. That is what leaders are for.”

Next week, Mr Obama is likely to sign a historic Wall Street re-regulation bill into law. Earlier this year he did the same for healthcare. But polls show the public either does not care, or even opposes these otherwise big reforms. “The longer this goes on, the more it looks like Obama wasted his first year on healthcare,” said the outside adviser. “It’s still the economy, stupid.”

Obama administration expanding use of Guantánamo Bay

More Broken Promises from The Obama Administration.

Forget closing Guantánamo Bay — President Barack Obama has reportedly green-lighted a plan to begin charges against new detainees at the controversial off-shore prison for the first time under his administration.

“The Obama administration is preparing to increase the use of military commissions to prosecute Guantánamo detainees, an acknowledgment that the prison in Cuba remains open for business after Congress imposed steep new impediments to closing the facility,” the New York Times reported.

Administration officials told the newspaper they were preparing military tribunal trials for several suspected terrorists at the prison, signaling a major policy shift for Obama in the face of high pressure from Congressional Republicans and numerous Democrats.

The ban would soon be officially lifted by Defense Secretary Robert Gates.

As a presidential candidate, Obama promised to close Guantánamo, arguing in part that it had become a worldwide symbol of a United States gone morally awry. He appeared to be making good on his pledge when he ordered the detention facility shut during his first week in office, explicitly banning its use for more suspects.

But, facing a defiant Congress and a public that’s skittish about trying terror detainees in civilian courts, Obama’s plan stalled. Several months into office, Obama accepted the use of military tribunals for some suspects. Two years later, it appears the administration has accepted the use of Guantánamo.

Critics have argued that shutting Guantánamo is necessary to restore respect for the rule of law, as the facility has been used to imprison suspects indefinitely without due process, casting a dark shadow over America’s outspoken advocacy for human rights.

According to the Times, the Department of Justice would during the next few weeks send several terror suspects to Guantánamo, including “Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri, a Saudi accused of planning the 2000 bombing of the American destroyer Cole in Yemen; Ahmed al-Darbi, a Saudi accused of plotting, in an operation that never came to fruition, to attack oil tankers in the Straits of Hormuz; and Obaydullah, an Afghan accused of concealing bombs.”

The US has a way to shut down Wikileaks, the infamous SDN list

The US has a way to shut down Wikileaks, the infamous SDN list

Could the SDN list be the best censorship tool for websites?

You may not know what the SDN list (Specially Designated Nationals) is but we´ll explain. It’s the US version of Iran and Chinas state censorship machine. Initially created with good intent to inform the world (and US entities, persons) of Terrorists, Rogue regimes and other wrongdoers. It slowly converted into a censorship list to block free speech on the Internet. You see, by adding a website to the list the U.S authorities could then evoke a closure order on the registrar where the domain is registered. Of course, if it’s a .com or .org then the US can evoke the said closure order anywhere in the world via ICANN. So while the US is feverishly trying to find a way to censor WIKILEAKS then maybe they should allege that Julian Assange works for say Cuba or Iran? No burden proof is required, just the need to “allege”. However crazy it may seem to free speech supporting Americans, there´s no congressional hearing, judge or Supreme Court needed here. Simply get OFAC (Office of Foreign Assets Control) to fabricate the claim, type the name into the list and Voila! Another US Censored website.

In 2006 the US censored a series of Cuba websites. Some with benign propaganda about the deceased American writer Ernest Hemingway www.Cuba-Hemingway.com while others preyed into the apparently dark and mysterious www.CubanCulture.com . The latter may have been added to the list because of the brief article on the locally active black magic and covert babalawos?

Shutting down the websites then became easy work. A quick call from a Government office to the US based Enom and ICANN and the sites were “disappeared” from worldwide viewing. Gone…Two years and counting

When, in 2008, the British owner of the domains claimed foul play, the US offered a consoling response “the owner can appeal to be removed from the list”. An appeal was immediately lodged but the US Gov is, for once in recent history, silent until this present day.

Not even Hillary Clinton could remember that the US has over 60 websites on the censorship list during her speech on January the 21st 2010 when she deplored Iran and China for shutting down websites.

This brings us back to Julian Assange and his current skirmish with the US over the WIKILEAKS website. The easiest way to shut down Wikileaks would obviously be to add the site to the SDN list as the US Judicial system is not required for it to do its trick of censorship. Surely a Photoshop specialist in Langley could easily manage a quick image of Ahmadinejad or Raul Castro with Julian to appease free speech activists? Maybe Julian has, at sometime in the past, taken vacation to Cuba which would certainly be the damning proof required to claim he was in cohorts with the Cuban Military, no? In the case of the domains censored in 2006, all that was needed was that the US governments “claim” that the domains were owned by the Cuban government. Obviously, nobody in the State Department knew how to do a whois search at the time. Even today, the domain names show the same owner as in 2006, the Cuban Government being conspicuously absent then and now from ICANN official records.

If Wikileaks could be taken offline for over three years as the numerous websites added to the SDN list have, then the US problem would invariably “go away”,  almost over night. Julian could then appeal and get one of these letters, then hear nothing, all the while his website is shutdown.

Good luck Julian! Censorship is not as hard to escape as you think, even in the land of free speech…

Terrorist Interrogation Tapes found under CIA desk

By Adam Goldman and Matt Apuzzo | YahooNews.com

The CIA has videotapes, after all, of interrogations in a secret overseas prison of admitted 9/11 plotter Ramzi Binalshibh.

Discovered in a box under a desk at the CIA, the tapes could reveal how foreign governments aided the United States in holding and interrogating suspects. And they could complicate U.S. efforts to prosecute Binalshibh, who has been described as one of the “key plot facilitators” in the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

Apparently the tapes do not show harsh treatment — unlike videos the agency destroyed of the questioning of other suspected terrorists.

The two videotapes and one audiotape are believed to be the only existing recordings made within the clandestine prison system and could offer a revealing glimpse into a four-year global odyssey that ranged from Pakistan to Romania to Guantanamo Bay.

The tapes depict Binalshibh’s interrogation sessions in 2002 at a Moroccan-run facility the CIA used near Rabat, several current and former U.S. officials told The Associated Press. They spoke on the condition of anonymity because the videos remain a closely guarded secret.

CIA Links to the Muslim Brotherhood Alleged

Pulitzer-prize winning journalist and Wall Street Journal reporter Ian Johnson. (Gary Feuerberg/ Epoch Times)

For most of us living in the United States, our first contact with extremist Islamic ideology came after the 9/11 attack by Islamic militants. Others may recall the Afghan Islamic freedom fighters, the mujahideen, against the Soviet Union in the late 1970s, whom we helped supply with weapons. At the time, we didn’t care a whole lot about fundamentalist Islam beliefs. But that would change after we were attacked.

The arming by the West of the mujahideen was likely primed by the experiences that U.S. intelligence had with the Muslim Brotherhood, going back to the 1950s, according to Wall Street Journal reporter Ian Johnson.

In his new book, A Mosque in Munich: Nazis, the CIA, and the Muslim Brotherhood in the West, Pulitzer-Prize winning journalist, Ian Johnson tells a story of covert operations, Cold War rivalries, historical personalities and intrigue behind the origins of political Islam. Today, the most articulate and influential leaders of political Islam are members of the Islamic Brotherhood, which former Nazis and the CIA had a role in nurturing.

Johnson’s search for the origins of the Afghan fighters begins three decades earlier, when there was a psychological war for control of Muslims living in Germany. He interweaves his story around three distinct groups: the Germans, the Americans, and the Moslem Brotherhood and their focus of interest in a mosque in Munich, known as the Islamic Center of Munich.

This mosque is not famous because of its religious origins or piety but for its political significance. In fact, when he was snooping around the area and speaking to locals, Johnson found it hard to get anyone to tell him how it began.

US Government officially lists Conspiracy Theories

“”Conspiracy theories exist in the realm of myth, where imaginations run wild, fears trump facts, and evidence is ignored.””

September 11

Dramatic, polarizing events often give rise to conspiracy theories, and the September 11 attacks were the most dramatic terrorist attacks in history. Nonsense about them abounds, especially in the popular video “Loose Change.” See “The Top September 11 Conspiracy Theories” for an overview. There was no “controlled demolition” of the World Trade Center towers. Instead, the unprecedented attack by hijacked airliners full of jet fuel destroyed support pillars, loosened fireproofing insulation, and ignited fires that destroyed the twin towers. The collapse of the north tower heavily damaged World Trade Center 7, igniting fires and causing its collapse. A hijacked plane, not a cruise missile, hit the Pentagon, as detailed in a photo gallery. Four thousand Jews did not miss work at the World Trade Center on September 11. And al-Qaida has admitted, many times, that it carried out the attacks.
